A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Does inability to communicate in a vegetative state mean the soul has left?

From my faith perspective, I believe a person in a vegetative state still has a soul but cannot express thoughts normally through the body. This is not a medical judgment I can establish for each case.

I use a computer analogy: hardware resembles the body, electricity the qi operating it, and software the soul. If programs cannot display through a screen, unseen instructions do not prove nothing exists inside. This helps explain my view, not a claim that the condition literally equals a broken computer component.

Precisely because expression is difficult, others’ feelings cannot determine that the person definitely wants to live or die. Communicating life-care preferences to family in advance deserves attention, with appropriate professional help for formal arrangements. I also said euthanasia was a major topic not fully discussed in that episode. This soul analogy cannot settle a family’s medical decisions.
