Deities and Faith
Are golden child figures and kuman thong identical, and is a name enough reassurance?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
From accounts I have encountered, similar appearance does not make them identical beings. Understand whether the claimed presence is a heavenly immortal child or protector, or a deceased child’s soul. Product names alone do not settle this.
Discussing Thai faith, I said some golden child figures made by Buddhist temples and monastics concern heavenly immortal children offering protection. I compared them to Taiwanese incense pouches to express a protective divine connection. This differs from placing a deceased child in an object and making offerings for services.
However, this was the religious explanation I knew then, not a guarantee every market item labeled golden child is unproblematic. In the same episode, I warned that even a claim to invite a Bodhisattva requires knowing who handles it and their origins and methods. Pleasant names cannot replace clarifying sources.
With kuman thong, I am more concerned whether the child can go where they belong or is being asked to secure wealth or relationships. Some clients genuinely pitied them and later willingly sought Bodhisattvas’ help toward a better place. That differs from seeking benefits through offerings. Without understanding origins and recipients, do not mix all child-shaped religious items together.
