A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Living in the present can still include planning ahead. Distinguish preparations needed now from continually imagining the worst outcome. Make appropriate preparations without spending the whole day in fear of events that have not happened.

For example, someone newly unemployed may have no salary for now but still hold savings and manage current life, yet continually imagine having nothing to eat later. I am discussing being overwhelmed by an imagined predicament, not claiming real hardship exists only in the mind. Preparing ahead is not wrong. Do not let excessive worry hide resources that remain available now.

I have changed in this respect too. I once feared that spending for happiness now must mean suffering later, but subsequently learned to treasure present joy. Happiness need not cost much: a small pendant I like or a capsule toy with my child can bring a good mood. Choices still require considering affordability. Living now does not mean spending all your money.

Our anniversary celebrations are similar. We plan and rehearse, yet wind, rain or equipment problems may prevent the original arrangement. Then we adjust. The possibility of change does not mean preparing nothing. Doing what is possible now and facing changes as they arise makes life more grounded.

Practical preparation can begin with current resources. For someone between jobs, I first ask how long savings can support life, then arrange the pace of learning and job-seeking. When my income was unstable, I saved more when earning more and less when earning less, gradually building reserves. Separating money for different purposes into envelopes was another person’s method I mentioned, not a requirement for everyone to use fixed proportions.

These preparations differ from continually imagining disaster tomorrow. When planning to write a book, I consider that writing time may reduce client income, so savings are needed beforehand. Living in the present means doing what is possible now, not knowingly ignoring future expenses.
