Why do I often recite the Universal Gate Chapter when facing fear?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Because I have personally used it and received help. When uneasy or worried, reciting the Universal Gate Chapter brings my mind closer to Guanyin Bodhisattva. Feeling that support means I am no longer simply worrying repeatedly alone.
The chapter describes the Bodhisattva hearing cries and relieving suffering, appearing in different forms according to beings’ circumstances to assist them. Whatever someone’s status or social position, they can approach the Bodhisattva. Reading this and believing the Bodhisattva is with me adds strength to face what frightened me.
The text is not long, making continued recitation relatively manageable. While reciting, believe in the principles it describes. Belief encourages action; good experiences from action then deepen the original confidence. To me, practice accumulates repeatedly in this way, gradually steadying the mind.
Naturally, I still worry and encounter frightening things. Then I recite the chapter again and pray for the Bodhisattva’s protection. I have genuinely felt blessings and protection through it, with greater steadiness and calm. That is why I share this personally practised and beneficial experience.
