Deities and Faith
How does Master view someone saying Śākyamuni Buddha sent them to him?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
I do not accept “Śākyamuni Buddha told me to find you” as proof that the Buddha personally assigned the meeting. In my understanding, the Buddha possesses profound wisdom and understands human minds. He would not use such a method to disturb someone’s peace.
A friend once contacted me through LINE, claiming a heavenly mission and saying the Buddha had told him to find me. Previously, with friends who were not yet students or disciples, I generally listened rather than immediately contradicting them face to face. However, being too indirect could make them think the account had been accepted, so I wanted to state my judgment clearly.
In my understanding of faith, the Buddha teaches cultivation to awaken wisdom and improve ourselves. The more one understands people, the more one knows that certain manifestations and relayed messages can create misunderstanding and direct attention toward extraordinary experiences. We therefore cannot believe something is necessarily the Buddha’s intention merely because his name is mentioned.
We need to understand the deities and Buddhas we follow to discern whether such claims accord with their teachings. In my religious understanding, continually desiring supernatural powers and special perceptions may allow unseen beings to appeal to those preferences and entice us through what we like. Experiences call for greater wisdom, not stronger belief merely because they are more extraordinary.
