A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Sometimes you do not yet understand enough to distinguish the problem. Other times something already feels strange, but you still hope to gain something and cannot bear to leave. These are two situations I remind people to notice when discussing deception along the spiritual path. Besides understanding what you are encountering, examine what you cannot let go of.

For example, if you deeply desire supernatural abilities or special perceptions, someone who makes you feel you could learn them may keep you waiting indefinitely. Even when something feels wrong, you cannot release the expectation, giving others an opportunity to exploit it. Spiritual practice needs to return to wisdom, virtue, and the principles you originally intended to learn.

So build sound knowledge and understanding while examining whether you are overly attached to spiritual powers, fame, gain, or other desires. If you cannot judge a matter, raise it for discussion, hear others' views, and consider whether they make sense. Keep this ability to think even when facing threats or intimidation, rather than being driven only by fear.

Ming Fen recalled that when she wanted to leave, friends would persuade her to return. Familiar people were there, and their repeated encouragement to try again and verify further could hold her through personal feelings. She also reminded us that if something feels wrong but you cannot admit a past choice was mistaken because you have spent many years there, you may keep finding reasons to defend the original decision.

Later, she became willing to face the matter and apologized to friends she had brought there. This was Ming Fen's experience, not a demand that everyone handle things in her way. I too have made poor judgments and choices. Seeing a problem and changing your approach still allows a new beginning. You do not need to leave the rest of your life in the same place simply to prove that all your past decisions were right.
