Spiritual Cultivation and Movement
Must you understand all of spiritual cultivation before beginning to learn?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
You do not need complete understanding before beginning. Learning about it before contact is one approach; carrying questions and learning gradually through experience is another. Not understanding is precisely why learning is needed. Serious willingness to explore matters most.
I did not initially know this was called spiritual cultivation. I encountered it first and gradually sought answers. Qi-induced and spontaneous spiritual movement were unfamiliar but intriguing, so I explored. Looking back, I learned much through experiences that also included hardship, obstacles, and low periods. This was my path, not one everyone must repeat. Reading and asking before beginning is also valid.
Like cooking, many books and videos still require actual experience with heat to know what to do. Cultivation also involves attentive experience, asking teachers about uncertainty, discussing sensations, and gradually adjusting. But intention must be sound, not rushing through exercises only to obtain powers.
Some teachers encourage prior understanding to help students proceed steadily and avoid confusion, which I agree with. Learning by doing may require more experiences and hardship. Connections and circumstances differ, so no answer fits everyone, and earlier people's experience can guide us. After choosing a beginning, retain motivation and willingness to question and correct yourself to keep learning.
