Why does Master use “knowing only darkness” to explain the difficulty of guiding hell beings?

For a being never exposed to light, believing a world of light exists is difficult. I use this situation when discussing hell to explain why Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva’s guidance is so demanding.

In my faith understanding, the hell realm resembles darkness where one cannot see a hand before one’s face. Beings born there know only darkness and do not naturally know another world. Suddenly being told of light, believing, and willingly moving toward it are difficult.

This makes Kṣitigarbha’s great vow moving. The Bodhisattva still willingly guides beings in hell and hungry-ghost realms. Understanding the vow means more than remembering a title: appreciate willingness to contribute for beings so difficult to help. It also reminds us to treasure human life and present learning opportunities and practice toward a better direction.
