A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

When people see your behavior, they often think of the group you belong to, and it may even affect their impression of the deities. Wearing group clothing calls for particular care in everything you say and do, including basic respect and courtesy.

If members of a spiritual group push people around and disregard their feelings, observers may easily wonder whether the group’s deities have taught them anything. Yet the deities may have taught a great deal; it may be the people who have not held themselves to those teachings or put them into practice.

I therefore remind disciples not only to remember which deity they are connected with, but also to examine how they treat others in daily life. Mutual respect, accommodation, and willingness to step back when possible affect how others understand the faith. Conducting yourself well and letting people feel respected matters more than constantly emphasizing your group identity.
