A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

I write them down because something understood in the moment may later be forgotten. Notes also leave material to organise and reconsider afterwards. Preserving an insight allows learning to continue from it.

During one retreat, after becoming quiet, I thought about practice, energy and ways to help people learn. Sometimes, after only a few minutes of meditation, I got up to take notes because an understanding had suddenly arisen and I wanted to remember it. This was my way of learning on that occasion, not an expectation that everyone must have the same inspiration during meditation.

After writing, we can return to ask why we reached that thought and what we actually understood. Preserving the content allows further organisation, rather than remembering only that the occasion seemed fruitful while forgetting all the details.
