A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Communication and Boundaries

Do robes and a certificate of monastic status make someone automatically trustworthy to support?

You cannot look only at robes or a certificate and safely disregard all other behaviour. Appearing dressed as a monastic differs from having a clear mind and practising seriously.

Discussing alms-seeking with Miao Nian, I reminded people to learn more and observe first. When someone gives support, how does the recipient speak and treat people? Is there appreciation and gratitude, or complaint that the amount is too small? Such attitudes help you understand the person beyond clothing or a displayed identification.

If doubts remain after observing, you do not need to force yourself to give. I hope giving comes willingly and happily. You can choose another form of generosity and assist a need you understand better, allowing the goodwill to continue finding expression.
