Does an intimate dream about a fellow practitioner mean you were past-life lovers and should be together now?

You cannot conclude that someone was your lover in a past life and that you must be together now simply because you dreamed of intimacy with them. First look clearly at your actual relationship. Do not rush to use a dream you cannot understand to decide your romantic life.

Dao Xuan once recounted a spiritual friend's experience. This person dreamed of intimacy with a male fellow practitioner at the same spiritual center, remained affected by it afterward, and wondered whether they had a past-life connection. Yet the person also said they did not know him well. We discussed desire, their feelings about each other, and possible influences from the center's environment, but these were possibilities we were considering. We did not establish any one cause.

Even if there really is a past-life connection, you still have to face the circumstances of this life. Two single people being interested in each other is entirely different from one of them already being married. The past life belongs to the past. If you are not the person beside them in this life, you cannot keep clinging to a past-life story. You still need to deal clearly with the relationships before you now.

If you really cannot distinguish what the dream means, you can first treat it as a dream so that it does not keep pulling at you. If you remain deeply concerned and unable to judge, you can explain what happened to other elders or teachers and hear different perspectives. Spiritual practice should help the mind return to peace. Dreams that become more confusing the more you think about them call for particular care.

Even if it is not a dream and someone directly tells you that you were spouses or lovers in a past life, that does not oblige you to accept them in this life. I have discussed how, when someone says this, you still need to consider whether you want the relationship now and share those feelings. If you do not want further contact, you can refuse and, if necessary, block them. You do not need to force yourself to maintain a relationship because of a past-life story.

Feeling familiar with someone at a first meeting can only be kept as your own impression for now. As I have said, it might reflect a connection, or it might be a mistaken impression. You cannot decide an entire relationship on the feeling of a single glance. Even if an earlier story existed, it belongs to that earlier chapter. Whether you can get along in this life still comes back to the people and choices before you now.
