Starting Spiritual Practice
How does accepting offerings differ from greedily wanting others to give you things?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
Consider whether someone voluntarily expresses care or you continually want things and demand they provide them. A heart without grasping does not mean all offerings are forbidden. It means not turning opportunities to help into opportunities to extract.
Someone voluntarily offering to a deity or supporting a spiritual center expresses their own intention, which can be accepted naturally. But if you specify seafood or steak and demand disciples bring it, repeatedly claiming the deity wants it, examine whether you convey divine intention or satisfy human desire.
Circumstances also matter. An occasional joke differs from daily requests and demands for disciples' flattery. One remark about food does not settle someone's motive. Notice long-term behavior and whether divine authority is used to make others provide personal enjoyment.
When helping, keep attention on the person's needs. Receive voluntary gratitude thankfully and continue examining your motives. Being a teacher or divine representative does not make flattery and offerings an entitlement.
