Deities and Faith
Why do I believe in the Bodhisattva? Must I identify a particular miracle?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
For me, believing in the Bodhisattva has become a natural part of life. My family worshipped Guanyin Bodhisattva when I was small. My mother recited sacred names and led us in recitation and prayer when difficulties arose. Growing up with this was like having family constantly beside us. I did not ask myself afresh every day why I believed.
Someone once suddenly asked why I believed so strongly in the Bodhisattva. I was taken aback and could not answer immediately. Thinking about it later, it was not that I had never received help. Many experiences had simply become so familiar and integrated into life that I did not keep remembering how unusual they were.
When a television station wanted to interview me about these stories, I again could not immediately recall them. I even asked nearby disciples, whose reminders brought back many events. For me, belief has accumulated little by little through this relationship and learning. It does not require waiting for a dramatic event each time before there can be a connection with the Bodhisattva.
However, having faith from childhood did not mean I began without any questions. When I first entered spiritual practice, even after experiencing perceptions and miracles, I was not yet completely convinced. Only through repeated prayers and experiences did confidence gradually deepen. I used scores of sixty, eighty and one hundred as a comparison for this gradual accumulation.
