A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

I understand it through virtue and great aspiration, not only rivalry. Looking toward heaven means hoping one’s virtues reach that height, not necessarily taking heaven’s position.

Discussing the Great Sage’s confidence, practitioners noted his courage in adopting the title. Positively, I see a great aspiration and belief in striving toward a higher state. I compare it with all beings possessing Buddha-nature and the possibility of Buddhahood: the opportunity is not confined to the already accomplished.

The name then becomes more than impressive status; it reminds us how to practise. Have confidence and aspiration, then consider developing virtues. A grand self-chosen title does not mean achievement is complete.
