Deities and Faith
What can we learn from Qianliyan and Shunfeng’er beyond seeing far and hearing widely?

We can learn to see clearly and listen deeply. Qianliyan is not merely about distance. I also use a microscope as a comparison: look beyond appearances to the problem’s core. Shunfeng’er similarly involves understanding what someone truly expresses, not merely hearing many sounds.
I agree with Dao Xuan’s reminder to avoid shortsighted gain and see far and listen broadly. In Mazu’s spirit of responding to cries of suffering, first see difficulties and hear needs to know what direction to offer. Faith involves learning divine virtues, not simply envying special powers.
Mazu resembles a guiding light at sea, and we can ask whether we can offer others a little light. Yet guiding requires continued learning and growth, compassion, and willingness to help. Without caring for our own condition, steady help is difficult. Applying these qualities in life matters more than only remembering protectors’ names.
