Deities and Faith
How does Master Shengyuan understand Mazu statues with gold, pink, and black faces?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
In Sheng Zhen Men's understanding, gold, pink, and black faces present different energetic states of Mazu. The gold-faced First Mazu symbolizes attained fruition and divinity; the pink-faced Second Mazu resembles her complexion in human life; the black-faced Third Mazu emphasizes a martial form confronting harmful spirits and demons. Different names and colors still concern Mazu worship.
This introduces the account used in our school's worship, not a way to assign identical origins to every temple's statues from a photograph. Dao Xuan also mentioned that long worship may blacken a statue through incense smoke, so it could originally have been gold or pink. We retained that possibility.
Understanding divine forms helps us approach and know deities, after which their virtues still matter. Worshipping Mazu is more than identifying colors. Learn how she notices others' needs and helps, bringing the faith into your life.
