A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Was earlier chanting wasted if I did not dedicate its merit?

No. Omitting a dedication text does not make past practice wasted. Wisdom, blessings, and understanding gained still belong to you. Dedication clarifies intention, giving the merit a more definite recipient and purpose.

It resembles handwriting practice. Even without submitting the page, you practiced and may write better. The unsubmitted assignment simply may not be known to the teacher. Chanting without dedication similarly brings gains, but may not clearly convey them toward the intended help or aim.

I generally recommend dedication for clarity and reassurance, while considering the scripture. Some Taoist adversity-resolving texts already dedicate in the middle or ending; do not generalize that Taoism never needs it. The Golden Light Mantra already expresses protection and may need no separate dedication. The Scripture of Clarity and Stillness emphasizes understanding, so omission need not cause alarm.

Some people chanted happily until told only dedication made it useful, then feared all earlier recitation wasted. In my energy understanding, fear shakes confidence and may scatter accumulated merit strength. Do not keep denying past effort over a perceived omission. Clarify doubts, dedicate clearly going forward, and continue accepting and practicing teachings.
