A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

Why are roadside shrines to the Five Camps placed in different directions?

The Five Camps describe divine troops protecting east, west, south, north, and center. Ancient city gates with guarding generals provide my analogy: protection appears in different directions rather than only one central temple.

Some southern towns have small shrines around a main temple for Five Camp generals. Whether and where they can be established depends on custom, land, and villagers’ agreement. They are not restricted to large temples, nor are all places identical.

I understand roadside shrines through village protection and prayers for safe travel, including residents’ regular gratitude. Small size does not reduce respect for faith. Divine presence and individual experiences still require inquiry; building size cannot measure each temple’s efficacy.
