A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

They are different. A Brightness Lamp shines continuously, expressing a prayer for the brightness of one’s vital spiritual condition and for peace throughout the year. An adversity-averting blessing ceremony asks deities to help remove calamities and negative conditions that need attention at that time. Their purposes differ. We cannot treat them as the same simply because both involve seeking blessings.

Lighting a lamp does not mean leaving it unattended for a whole year. We explained at the time that scriptures would be recited on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar month, with the merit dedicated to those who had sponsored lamps. The lamp symbolises brightness and also involves divine protection and the strength of continued recitation. I have also said that large temples elsewhere likewise hold ceremonies, recite scriptures and dedicate merit. These are all good things.

Which to participate in still depends on your own needs. The two can complement each other, or you can learn about them according to what you wish to pray for. There is no need simply to select every service on the list. Participating in a blessing ceremony does not mean that no difficulties will arise afterwards. After sponsoring a lamp, you can still recite scriptures and practise yourself. After receiving blessings, you still need to make the efforts and adjustments your life requires.
