Saying that guardians are ‘without sentiment’ means that they value rules and do not abandon principles because of personal feelings or favours. It does not mean that they lack compassion, nor that someone who made mistakes in the past is forever undeserving of help. Whether the person is willing to change now and can show sincerity still matters greatly.

On a past trip to Japan, I bought pictures of the Wind God and Thunder God and wanted to consecrate them at a friend’s home. At first, however, I could not invite their presence. In my spiritual perception, they were asking what I intended to do by requesting their protection, and what my task, mission and aspirations were. Only after I clearly explained my wish to help living beings did I experience what I regarded as the successful completion of the consecration, after which I brought the pictures home.

This helped me understand more clearly that seeking protection cannot be only about what I will receive. I also have to ask what I am willing to do and whether I am making an effort to be a good person. Even if we did not do well in the past, I believe the spiritual troops and generals remain willing to protect us if we are now willing to adjust ourselves and act with genuine sincerity.

So upholding rules and giving people a chance to correct their mistakes need to be understood together. Having made a mistake does not mean that all future opportunities are lost. But we also cannot merely announce a grand aspiration while completely ignoring how we actually conduct ourselves.
