What is a household guardian spirit? Is it simply a ghost living at home?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
A household guardian should not simply be equated with a wandering ghost. I have discussed several accounts: local protective spirits or small spirits; spirits of former residents remaining after death; and a home’s protective energy appearing in an understandable form. These situations need separate understanding. Hearing “household guardian” does not establish a ghost that must quickly be expelled.
I personally favor comparison with the City God: as a city has a protective deity, a house has protective energy. This is my faith understanding, not a verified identical explanation for every house. In discussing actual services later, I also said we had encountered several situations. We still need to consider this particular home, rather than retain only my favored understanding and delete the others.
Wandering spirits, divine soldiers, and household guardians also refer to different contexts. “Wandering spirits” is our term for such unseen beings. Divine soldiers concern relationships of divine leadership, service, and cultivation. Some were originally deceased spirits, while others were assigned from a principal temple; they cannot all be described as harmful. Household guardians belong to the context of domestic protection and worship. Even when some cases involve former deceased residents, that does not make all three names interchangeable.
In worship, respect existing customs and explain actual circumstances clearly. I still prepare a low table according to custom. A different understanding does not make all traditions meaningless. Yet worshipping once does not mean a missed later occasion necessarily brings punishment. I have discussed troublesome cases in some places but encountered relatively few. Lacking protective strength also differs from deliberately harming people.
If there is genuinely a problem at home, investigate that problem. We offer corresponding suggestions when our service assessment considers it related to the guardian, rather than blaming every work, relationship, or financial issue there. Caring for the house and living well with family must not be neglected either.
