Starting Spiritual Practice
Does spiritual cultivation require religious faith?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
You need not choose a particular deity or join a religious group before beginning to understand spiritual cultivation. But if discussing Sheng Zhen Men’s specific method, you at least need willingness to know your spirituality and understand our discussion of original spirit, soul, and reincarnation. This concerns somewhat different levels from simply correcting temper and improving conduct.
I have explained that no particular scripture, mantra, or deity is compulsory. However, in my experience, approaching trusted deities and Buddhas and reciting scriptures and mantras gives the heart clear support and helps it settle. Understand why it helps, rather than completing forms and considering all practice finished.
Some first experience spirit-induced movements and become curious, then gradually learn about deities and practice. My own path also partly moved from experience toward trust. Yet unusual feelings still require learning and judgment. Strong sensations alone do not establish a message’s correctness.
Ultimately, the choice remains personal. Even after encountering spirituality, you can say you presently prefer caring for family, pursuing relationships, and living your own life. I hope people understand their hearts and gradually coordinate the path they want, rather than feel they have no choice because someone says their original spirit wants cultivation.
