A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Life, Death and Ancestors

Do ritual boats, lotuses or “sending into light” establish that rites for the deceased are complete?

Ritual boats, lotuses or the phrase ‘sent into light’ alone do not establish completion. I have said merely placing such objects may offer some help but has limited effects; not every unseen being can be assisted this way. Understand who acts, how and where the being is finally directed.

Dao Xuan and I discussed places displaying boats and lotuses in a shrine, hoping beings take them and deities guide them onward. My reservation is that having an object cannot directly equal completed work. In our experience, we report the intended beings and matter to deities, while someone actually performs and supports the ritual. We do not simply admit beings and wait for deities to do everything.

However, I did not call all simple placement ineffective. I also said divine power and beings’ conditions matter. Some may have practised before or have particular connections and receive help. The point is not turning limited possible conditions into automatic liberation for every arrival.

For ‘sending into light,’ I ask what that light represents and where it leads. If even the practitioner does not know, those seeking help understand still less. Sheng Zhen Men explains destinations and guidance as understood in our faith so people know what is being done. Naming a destination does not objectively prove the unseen world.

Claims that visualising light and waving a hand cleanse everything also call for observation and understanding. An easy appearance cannot bypass scriptural principles, practice and actual ability. Helping aims to guide beings somewhere appropriate, not leave them trapped in a human body. Clarify these meanings before discussing form, rather than learn a movement without understanding the work.
