In folk faith, Tiger Lord is a divine general who suppresses harmful influences, expels evil, and protects local areas. People also seek children’s safety and wealth. Understand these through stories of tigers becoming protectors rather than assuming one sole role.

Tradition gives some deities tiger mounts, such as Wealth God Zhao Gongming and the Black Tiger General, and Tiger Lord commonly appears at Earth God temples. I have discussed ancient fear of tigers transformed through faith into protective strength, understood as using fierceness against harmful forces. Discussing Zhong Kui, I made a similar comparison: tradition calls him ugly, using greater ugliness to frighten ghosts believed ugly themselves. Tiger Lord’s fierce power and Zhong Kui’s appearance express ancient concepts. These introduce religious stories and symbolism.

I discussed wild tigers eating people, including children playing in mountains. Folk believers therefore asked the Earth God to restrain Tiger Lord and tigers from eating humans. In this faith, tigers gradually became protectors. Common roles include guarding a place and removing harmful influences, and prayers for children’s health made Tiger Lord a child protector too. This explains folk origins, not guaranteed efficacy from worship.

I mentioned two explanations for wealth prayers. First, Tiger Lord serves the Earth God, whose association between land and wealth gradually gave a wealth-deity image. Second, the Taiwanese pronunciation of Tiger Lord resembles “having money,” creating an auspicious association. Biting away harmful things is another protection account. These explanations concern different aspects of wealth or guardianship.

Folk practices for children’s nightmares, night crying, or fright include worshipping Tiger Lord, touching the tiger’s mouth, and offering red eggs for peace, then taking blessed eggs home to eat. I introduced these as existing prayer customs, not certainty about the cause of a child’s crying.

The program’s final summary also said children unable to sleep, having nightmares, or crying at night could seek General Tiger Lord’s help. That approach was mentioned without further detail.

Offerings vary. Some use raw meat or eggs, and one approach uses duck eggs for a sound association with suppressing harmful influences. I think a protector with divine status need not receive only foods matching a tiger’s earlier diet. Sheng Zhen Men offers cooked chicken cutlets or fried chicken. Understand other places’ intentions without judging different offerings necessarily wrong.

The older explanation for raw eggs was that tigers eat raw food, hence raw meat and eggs. I often ask people to consider that snakes are more commonly associated with eating raw chicken eggs.

Sheng Zhen Men has the Flying Tiger General and Earth Tiger General. I have discussed our experience of their removing harmful influences, protecting children, and guarding feline animals. This does not assign identical roles to every temple. Gradually understand the virtues of Tiger Lord and other deities, rather than seek benefits without knowing whom you honor.
