Lord Bao first came to help, and only later did we enshrine a statue. Early chess readings clarified clients' difficulties and possible solutions. Sometimes a black cannon and black general representing him indicated that his help was needed.

Before we had his statue, he had already descended through me repeatedly to assist devotees. My consciousness remained clear, aware of what he wanted to say and how he helped.

At a religious-goods shop I later saw a solemn statue carved from green sandalwood and retaining its natural color. Growing affinity made it feel as though it belonged to us, so we brought it to Sheng Zhen Men. Painted statues are not bad; preferences differ, and we favored natural wood then.

More service experience gradually deepened understanding. Initially we often encountered his assistance for deceased people and rites connected with the Ten Kings of the Underworld. Later I better understood his help for the living, bringing justice to those wronged. That understanding developed along the way.

Natural wood was the initial choice. Later we prepared statues of Ox-Head, Horse-Face, civil and martial judges, and others, but matching natural wood was difficult and custom carving needed time. We painted Lord Bao too so the group looked consistent. Understand earlier and later descriptions in context. Choosing natural color once does not forbid later adjustment.
