Deities and Faith
Are a deity’s ceremonial arrival and descent through a medium the same?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
They are different. Ceremonial arrival during pilgrimage means visiting and greeting another temple and bringing accompanying statues, command flags, and censers inside. Descent means a deity working through a medium. They may occur together without sharing the same meaning.
Our disciples may join arrival through their own original spirit to express courtesy. The procession’s censer, flags, and statues have their own arrangements. These are visiting rites, not a demand that everyone entering receive a deity into their body.
Dismounting also respectfully invites accompanying deities and troops into the temple, honoring both sides. On an earlier late visit to Shoutian Temple, we omitted the usual procedure to avoid disturbing staff. This led to the later faith account of troops lined up at the entrance.
Arrival also draws on regular movement practice. I compare it with presenting learning outcomes to encourage serious training and understanding on site. One jump or movement sequence cannot replace that practice. Personal condition and local etiquette still need understanding first.
