A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

If capable of helping and the beings are willing, I prefer asking Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to guide and receive them, helping them leave. Merely driving them away leaves their original difficulties. Compassion also asks whether we can help them leave suffering.

Dao Xuan shared that while reciting the Kṣitigarbha Sutra in rented housing, rice from an altar cup flew toward the practitioner. A teacher and a friend able to see unseen beings later assessed it as connected with nearby deceased cats, and the teacher drove them away. Dao Xuan could not clearly see the unseen situation, but hearing the friend describe their screams brought sadness and the thought of comforting and delivering them instead.

I replied that schools differ, but Sheng Zhen Men hopes, where help is possible and the beings willing, to ask divine beings to take and settle them. Sending them back leaves them wandering. Having somewhere to be received seems a better direction to me.

If something unexplained genuinely occurs during recitation, first explain the sequence and explore causes together rather than becoming frightened. Dao Xuan’s example also involved nearby conditions and individual sensitivity. Not everyone reciting at home will encounter the same event.
