A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. The original spirit, simply put, is your original self. A spiritual patron and spiritual teacher concern the soul’s connected roots, elders and guidance relationships. In Sheng Zhen Men’s terminology these names are not interchangeable. Sensing a deity does not automatically make that deity your spiritual patron, nor does a shared character in a name establish every connection.

When I began practicing, Teacher Wang explained our learning context through Buddhist refuge, Daoist recognition of a spiritual patron and returning to ancestral roots. This explained the meaning of recognition, not that every Buddhist and Daoist system is identical. After the rite, I expected a clear change but felt fairly ordinary. Gradually drawing close to the Nine Heavens Mysterious Lady later brought familiarity like family, mother or teacher. No dramatic sensation during a rite need not mean failure.

My affection for Guanyin was familiar earlier, while I came to know the Nine Heavens Mysterious Lady later. Recognition, regular practice and spirit movement gradually helped me understand that guidance. When a friend asked why I believed in the Bodhisattva, I could not immediately answer because the feeling seemed as natural as family. Looking back at education, the military assignment and practice, I wondered whether before birth there might have been connections or agreements with deities and Buddhas, or a great vow of my own. This is reflection expressed as perhaps and possibility, not authority to announce everyone’s past-life identity.

Understanding a spiritual patron is intended to clarify direction and further learning, not obtain higher status. Dreams and teachers’ statements still need understanding and checking. They cannot automatically become “I am an incarnation of this deity.” Different spiritual teachers may guide different stages. Learning and practice remain central; a title cannot do the work for you.

People have also asked about numbers. I most often encounter one spiritual patron but have seen two, using department heads and double majors as comparisons. There may be several spiritual teachers. These comparisons clarify relationships, not designate every guiding or familiar-feeling deity as a patron or make more patrons superior.

Early on I felt the Nine Heavens Mysterious Lady more strongly and other deities less. Later I understood that an absence of obvious feeling does not mean no connection. After a Daoist study camp at Sanqing Temple in Yilan, I felt my relationship with the Three Pure Ones more deeply. From first knowing the name to personal understanding took roughly eleven years. This makes me more willing to let people learn and understand gradually rather than rushing to give an answer.

A spiritual father or mother is not necessarily the spiritual patron. In human terms, parents give birth and raise us, while a teacher or employer who teaches work skills and gives opportunities may be someone else. For some people, spiritual parents may also be patrons. We cannot insist everyone must have separate figures in a fixed number. Sheng Zhen Men sometimes uses a recognition rite to connect with a spiritual father or mother, so beyond the rite’s name, understand who the connection in that instance is actually with.

In plainer terms, a spiritual patron is a deity deeply important and influential to your soul. Spiritual teachers may be different deities guiding different stages. This is different from the original spirit, your own original soul. When discussing spirit guides, first clarify what guidance relationship is meant. Every term cannot simply be equated.

When Xin Xun came to learn, I discussed how identifying a spiritual patron and formally recognizing one are different. You can understand first and wait gradually; learning a name does not demand an immediate rite. Whether a deity descends to respond also varies. Lacking that experience does not mean the deity does not love you. Feeling that you have a guide and being able to communicate clearly are also distinct and require further discernment.
