A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Notice whether everyday people, situations, and objects leave you steadier and clearer or more agitated and powerless. I describe positive energy through comfort, happiness, and warmth and negative energy through heaviness, discomfort, and unhappiness to support observation. Unhappiness does not establish another person as harmful, nor does comfort remove consequences.

I also describe protective body-mind-spirit energy through the original spirit’s radiance and “three fires.” Dim radiance or fires symbolize a low state within faith. I interpret encounters with negativity through harmful influences and connections and advise care, but do not mean three measurable fires inside the body. Turning your head does not always extinguish them, and this account does not establish every traffic accident’s cause.

Care for strength by reducing disputes, resentment, and repetitive speculation, tending to daily life, and drawing close to stabilizing faith and practice. Upright conduct supports inner strength. Acknowledge mistakes, repent, and correct them without remaining trapped in guilt. Some need a teacher; others begin with recitation, quiet, exercise, or rest, according to circumstances.

Know when to approach or withdraw. If someone is angry while you are low and unstable, forced contact may intensify conflict. Drunken disorientation can make a glance or collision misunderstood. Stay alert around arguments or troubling situations and leave promptly rather than proving strength or assuming nothing serious will happen.

My phrase “twice or three times as alert” stresses not taking things lightly; it does not calculate risk or require imagining the worst daily. See the present clearly, recognizing what to approach, reduce, or handle. That is the intention of seeking favorable conditions and avoiding harm in life.

Being busy with practice cannot mean skipping food and sleep. In replenishing energy, I emphasize eating and sleeping well. Poor sleep and continual anxiety also call for understanding what concerns you and what needs adjustment. Outwardly seeming able to continue does not justify endless depletion.

During financial hardship, I once neglected food to save money. Allowing myself better, enjoyable meals later felt different throughout my condition. I share this to discourage continual deprivation, not to require lavish meals or a particular spending amount for good energy. Eating more also does not mean better cultivation.

Resting according to the body also cares for strength. I have explained that late nights felt less noticeable when young, while around fifty, staying up could leave me tired for one or two days. This taught me not to demand youthful stamina from myself now. Cultivation concerns more than intention; listen when the body needs rest.
