A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. Practice does not necessarily mean weak family connections. Being busy with exercises and helping others may reduce shared time, but time together and emotional depth are not identical. Actual interaction and connection matter.

An esoteric Buddhist teacher once encouraged me to avoid marriage because of my affinity for practice, saying family and children reduce time for exercises and serving beings. I was already married with children and still had life to face. Within twenty-four hours, parents naturally owe care to family. Yet I sometimes left agreed family outings to help a client with an urgent need. Time allocation affects relationships. This was my struggle, not a choice everyone must copy.

I now interact less with my child and see my mother less often, but do not therefore call the affection weak. Childhood closeness and long conversations with my mother also built an important inner connection. Having become family, I prefer treasuring and nurturing it within available time and ability.

Through faith, marriage, parents, siblings and children may all involve lessons. A child in a practising household may share that connection or have personal work: sometimes learning care, sometimes releasing worry. Each situation still needs understanding rather than being dismissed as weak ties.

Where even basic care and support are absent and the relationship scarcely feels familial, some expectations may need release. I knew a girl whose divorced parents remarried without directly caring for her. As an adult she needed to face the present and live her own life. This is not confined to practitioners. First understand what happened, then address it.

Releasing attachment and returning to stillness ultimately benefits oneself. Hoping one person’s attainment helps family is good, but first do your own practice and examine whether you have that ability before discussing taking family upward. Treasuring relatives and practising well are both present responsibilities.

I have discussed family being difficult to guide and possibly karmic creditors, but relationships cannot become labels alone. Another view is mutual assistance in learning: someone learns independence, someone receives care and understands love before sharing it. This is my faith view of family lessons, still requiring each circumstance rather than one explanation for every household.
