Starting Spiritual Practice
How does seeking personal liberation differ from extending practice to help others?

Cultivation seeks not only personal freedom from distress but learning to help more people flourish. At Sheng Zhen Men, meditation, recitation, and serving deities are all parts of practice, with understanding of where they lead. Freedom from suffering, happiness, helping beings, and ultimately returning to the soul’s original source beyond the bonds of rebirth form the direction we discuss.
Honoring parents, keeping promises to friends, and working responsibly are human duties that must be fulfilled. Moving toward the realm of deities and Buddhas further requires giving to people without direct ties to us. Recitation is not merely getting through words: understand the virtue of the deities and Buddhas in scriptures and why they help, then apply compassion and selflessness in life.
If service for deities is only an exchange for protection and personal advantage, it remains self-centered. Beginners need not understand everything or be perfect; adjust step by step rather than pretend perfection. Practice requires accumulation, like a language becoming familiar through regular use. Do not simply wait until old age, when sufficient time or action may not follow. Those starting later need even more confidence and perseverance to begin what they can.
