Spiritual practice and earning money through work can go together. Life continues, and necessary expenses need attention. Financial stability is part of steadiness in body, mind, and spirit, so arranging work and daily living is itself something practice must face.

Calling money an external possession reminds us to release attachment to it, not disregard living needs. Overvaluing money lets desire lead us. Undervaluing it until bills cannot be paid can also bring worry and unease when matters arise. That balance requires personal judgment.

I met a practicing friend who wanted early retirement to devote time to benefiting living beings. I reminded the friend that helping is possible with or without money and need not wait for retirement. But retirement without income or the means to cover basic expenses can make caring for others harder too. Willingness to do good is valuable, while personal living needs also deserve care.

Doing a paid job well can also be a contribution. Helping is not sincere only when free. Discussing learning and service with Miao Yuan, I expressed gratitude for students' and disciples' help while recognizing that they have lives and need income. What matters is seriousness and whether only the pursuit of gain remains. Charging or not charging alone cannot determine goodwill.

Relationships and family are similar. Practice allows dating, marriage, and children. Contact with spirituality does not mean losing the choice of family life. When discussing purity of mind, I used pursuing someone you like as an example: sincerely show who you are and care for the person without coercion or taking by force. Wanting money or a relationship involves more than whether desire exists. The way we approach it matters.

So calling money an external possession reminds us to loosen excessive attachment, not neglect basic living. A wish to help can begin with or without wealth. But abandoning income for more religious service while becoming unable to support yourself calls for reconsidering the arrangement. Seeking prosperity and practice need to be considered together in daily life.
