Recognizing and facing past neglect can still begin repair. Consider what sadness went unnoticed and what needs lacked care, and be willing to apologize for your omissions. A child's understanding of parental difficulties may help communication too, but change is not demanded from only one side. I have discussed young clients' pain at childhood bullying being dismissed when they sought family help. Those were individual experiences, not a single explanation for all depression or mental illness.

Take a child's account of bullying seriously rather than dismiss it as play. Things adults consider small may remain in a child's heart. I once recalled a student news story as a reminder, but did not fully remember identities and causes, so it cannot establish that a tragedy resulted entirely from lack of parental love. My own child also experienced classmates excluding them. After learning more, we understood the other child might have wanted company, and my child had other friends. That differed from other cases. Understand the present situation before applying a comparison.

Some people do not speak because they are afraid or do not know how, not because they do not want to. Families should notice proactively rather than wait for a complete explanation. If the concern is missing parental care, outsiders' comfort may not fill that gap. This describes where families can make an effort, not a demand that every wounded person return to reconcile with their family of origin.

As adults, we can also try to recognize parents' limitations. They may never have learned parenting or emotional management, which remain their own lessons. Miao Nian discussed choosing one's life in adulthood and, within one's capacity, taking a turn caring for parents. I was hit as a child if not asleep by nine and felt unhappy. Later I understood my parents may have wanted early sleep but could not handle everything well. Now, when Qian Qian enjoys dancing, I support her learning. Adjust through experience rather than only tell children to forgive. Parents also need to change, and understanding a reason does not erase harm.

Family interaction changes too. Before smartphones, gatherings more often involved conversation. With adulthood come separate jobs, families, and practice, changing time together. Noticing these changes and what is missing creates a chance to bring care back into one another's lives.

Repair also requires parents to admit mistakes. I encountered a mother hitting her daughter because of her own emotions. I considered this the mother's emotional management problem, requiring reconciliation: acknowledge perhaps not being a good mother or not yet knowing how to be one, and that harmful treatment was wrong. Then personally say to the daughter, 'But I love you.' If an adult child still faces intense emotions or violence at home, moving out first can give space. Willingness to repair does not require remaining within harm.
