Emotions and Inner Life
When emotionally unsettled, how can I practice shifting rather than suppressing feelings?
English translation draft · Based on the Chinese article. This is not a word-for-word translation approved by Master Shengyuan.
First notice the emotion and give it an outlet rather than pressing it inward. We discussed walking by the sea or in mountains, crying or calling out if needed, then gradually returning to balance after release. Seeing people bite a towel and stifle cries, I felt they still seemed to be suppressing rather than truly releasing.
A fellow co-host described allowing five minutes of irritation, or half a day or a day of low mood, then trying to return to ordinary life. This is that person's practice, not a requirement that everyone recover in five minutes. Notice emotions and practice gradually, rather than let them continually drag you along.
Deities' reminder to open the heart also means not hiding all real feelings to perform a social role. Sheng Zhen Men discusses authenticity, sincerity, and compassion: face feelings honestly, understand yourself openly, and wish happiness for yourself and others. If you want to go home and do your own things but continually suppress yourself to accommodate colleagues, examine what you truly feel.
Know what brings happiness before major setbacks and emotional entrapment leave you searching for an outlet. Familiarity with your daily state offers directions to try when difficulties come. This is practicing a shift, not forcing instant happiness while sad.
Ask daily, 'Am I happy today?' If not, understand why and what might be adjusted. In relaying Master Ji Gong's reminder, I hope people care for their state rather than remember only 'be happy' while overlooking real difficulties.
Consider areas separately: work, family, relationships, or feelings about where you live. What feels heavy or persistently uncomfortable? Without comparing others' lives, understand yourself honestly and seek feasible changes. Books, films, and enjoyable activities may help shift feelings, but return to what actually causes unhappiness too.
Browsing books in a bookstore makes me happy, and I enjoy its atmosphere. Others prefer films, variety shows, games, or videos. Different approaches suit different people. Knowing what loosens tension beforehand makes shifting easier when low, beyond remaining in the same emotion.
Examine causes of low periods too. Discussing job changes with Miao Yuan, I suggested distinguishing environmental changes from work methods needing adjustment. Sadness is normal. If persistently unhappy somewhere despite attempts to improve, seriously consider another setting, rather than resigning immediately whenever upset.
