A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

While caring for the deceased and helping their families, remember to care for yourself too. Work involving major casualties exposes you to a deeply painful side of life. Besides doing the job well, notice how much you are bearing inwardly. I greatly respect the willingness to overcome fear and help. From our religious perspective, this work also has the meaning of a heavenly calling.

In my experience of religious services, I understand these influences in terms of fearful and painful energy remaining at the scene and with the bodies. If you frequently work in these settings, pay particular attention to whether you are becoming increasingly low in spirits, inexplicably irritable, or impatient with family and colleagues. Sadness and tears are normal emotions and can have an outlet, but also consider whether that sadness keeps carrying you along.

Worship, scripture recitation, or practicing spirit-induced movements and transforming negative energy within our school are approaches I discuss for self-care. I value my connection with deities and confidence in faith, hoping to have the strength to put on the brakes at a critical moment. At the time, I also said that devout faith might lend us a hand in a crisis. This support helps us remain steady and avoid hurting others; having faith does not mean we no longer need to watch our emotions.
