A note before reading

This library is based on Master Shengyuan’s personal experiences and reflections on spiritual practice. They may not apply to everyone’s circumstances. It is important to distinguish everyday life from spiritual practice, and science from metaphysical beliefs. Use your own judgment and read with care. If you have questions, you are welcome to discuss them.

In Sheng Zhen Men's practice, life extends beyond this present lifetime to the soul's learning, reincarnation, and movement toward higher states. Calling human life precious reminds us that a body now allows thought, choice, and action. Value this chance to learn and change.

If each lifetime is like attending school, the question is what was learned this time. The body disappears, while the soul's experiences leave traces. I compare spiritual awakening to recovering forgotten memories through familiar places or smells. From belief in soul and reincarnation, practice gradually recognizes the true self, understands origins, and finds a way home.

First understand your direction and desired destination. Some hope to return as a person with blessings; others seek becoming an immortal or Buddha and liberation from reincarnation. For lay practitioners, I suggest beginning with the more understandable states of immortals and heavenly beings. With confidence and committed practice, liberation from the six realms can be the goal. Others enjoy human life and do not yet wish to return home. That is their choice too. Once a goal is clear, present lessons still require action.

News of locusts also led me to reflect through reincarnation and habitual tendencies on what energy becomes such a life. A cat's long daily sleep likewise prompted associations with its habits. These were faith-based reflections at the time. Discussing changes in insect form, I was even uncertain of the biological terminology and invited knowledgeable corrections. My reminder was that being human allows many experiences and learning opportunities worth cherishing now.

Within this understanding of faith, habits developed in life also influence direction after death. I explain this through energetic momentum: habitual generosity and prolonged powerful greed or attachment lead toward different worlds. But this concerns strong tendencies. Occasional playfulness or laziness is not that severe, and not every small fault has the same pull. Practice means adjusting direction while choice is still possible.

Small donations within one's means also carry kindness and blessings and are not wrong. Moving toward higher states calls for learning more selfless contribution. Comparing income and donation proportions was meant to show differences in intention and commitment between keeping most for personal enjoyment and directing more attention and effort toward others. Whether choosing another blessed human life or a deeper practice path, understand the choice and act seriously.

Recognizing origins does not finish the path. Discovering the original self means remembering who we are, not suddenly becoming a Buddha. Knowing where we came from and hope to return still leaves personal conduct to improve. Life's joys and sorrows, relationships, and willingness to correct ourselves through events all belong to learning.

If natural, selfless help is not yet possible, begin changing gradually in this life. Repeatedly develop kindness until willingness to give becomes a habit of life. I use 'the soul's DNA' as a comparison for this accumulation. Perhaps in a next or later life kindness can emerge more naturally. Begin with what is possible now and gradually become better.
